For black history month, we often reflect on people who have furthered the cause of equality and pushed the agenda of black excellence. Some have dedicated their life to service while others strived to positively craft African American culture. From activists to celebrities, we honor those living and those who have passed.

Here are some quotes from black women across the spectrum of influence that remind us to keep our chin up, and do the dang thing:

1.     “If I made a commitment, I stood by that commitment - and try to make it real. Because when you become leaders, the most important thing you have is your word, your trust. That's where respect comes from.” - Michelle Obama

2.     “Living in the moment means letting go of the past and not waiting for the future. It means living your life consciously, aware that each moment you breathe is a gift.” – Oprah Winfrey

3.     "I don't like to half commit to a role. It has to be worth my creative time. Otherwise, it's like being in a bad relationship." - Lupita Nyong’o

4.     “I'm less concerned about whether being a good corporate citizen burnishes a company's reputation. That's just an added benefit. I believe it's a responsibility, and there is no negotiating on responsibilities.” - Ursula Burns

5.     “My legacy is that I stayed on course... from the beginning to the end, because I believed in something inside of me.” - Tina Turner

6.     “Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough. Mary McLeod Bethune

7.     “I don’t know everything. I know a fraction of what there is to know and I don’t think I will ever know everything, but it’s important to me to constantly challenge myself, to understanding different viewpoints, really understanding nuance in topics, so I can feel qualified in what I say, so I’m not preaching falsely of what I’m unaware of.” – Yara Shahidi

8.     If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” - Shirley Chisholm

9.     “You just have to keep moving forward. You just have to keep doing something, seizing the next opportunity, staying open to trying something new. It doesn’t have to fit your vision of the perfect job or the perfect life. Perfect is boring, and dreams are not real. Just . . . DO.” - Shonda Rhimes

10.   “For me, it really is about the self-acceptance... the more time that I spend really accepting and allowing myself to be exactly where I am, the faster it is I move towards what I wanna be doing.” - Tracee Ellis Ross
