5 Tips for Staying Active At Work

By: Olivia Symone (iamoliviasymone)

Having a 9-5 where you are required to sit for more than half of the hours you are at work has more disadvantages than you think! No it doesn’t just make you lazy, but it increases lower back pains, tightens your hamstrings and some studies have even said it can flatten your buttocks, (and who wants that?)

Tip #1: Sitting on a stability ball for hours at a time instead of the standard office chair.

By doing this you can:

  • Burn extra calories by moving more because the more we move, the more we burn.

  • Relieve back pain if you have it by maintaining good posture.

  • Tone core muscles since you will need to work those muscles to stay balanced.

Tip #2 Track your health, set a goal and stick to it!

  • Download health tracker app. Some apps even have communities where you can compete with family or friends to see who is the most active over the course of one day, one week or even a month. A couple apps are:

  • Steps Pedometer

  • Pacer

  • StepsApp

  • Fitbit

  • Nike run club (for runners)

Tip #3: Increase the amount of steps you make.

Ways to increase your steps:

  • Drink more water, this will increase the times you have to go to the restroom, which makes you get up and move.
  • Take the stairs
  • Park farther from the door.

Tip #4: Snack, but healthy snacks ☺

Its important to push your metabolism when you are sitting for a long period of time and one way to do this is to snack intermittently. A few good things to snack on are:

  • Celery and peanut butter
  • Frozen grapes
  • Granola
  • Yogurt
  • Almonds
  • Boiled eggs
  • Avocado

Tip #5: Stretch!

My favorite at-work stretches are:

  • Lunges
  • Toe touches
  • Calf raises
  • Spinal twits

Staying active at a desk is hard work but the added challenge should motivate us to implement one or two of these tips. The smallest change can make the biggest difference.
