Lit Summer Minus the Alcohol

By: Fabiola Michel

I know exactly what you are thinking: “How can someone be lit with no alcohol?” Better yet, “how can someone have a lit summer with no alcohol?” Summer is all about hanging out and having a good time with friends and family. Majority of the time, whether it be a sangria, a Pina colada, or a mojito, there’s always a drink in hand while doing so. What most people fail to realize is that once you’ve had that first drink, you’re bound to pick up a 2nd, 3rd, and so on. Next thing you know, by the end of the night, you’ve accumulated over 1,000 calories just in drinks alone. I’ve been in the hospitality industry for over 2 years and I’ve seen calories in drinks range anywhere from 100 calories to over 600 per drink! Imagine having 3 drinks that are over 600 calories; That is over 1,800 calories in drinks alone! Yikes!! People just want to have a good time so they don’t pay attention to things like that, but imagine how many of those calories come from sugar alone! That is a lot of unwanted sugar being put into our bodies! I’m not by any means trying to scare you away from having your next drink, but I just wanted to have you all think about these numbers before you think about throwing back 5 cocktails.

This summer we are challenging you to put down the alcoholic beverages and just enjoy the summer without it. Your bodies will thank you later ladies; We all know how much bloating alcohol can cause and I would rather us all be beach ready at all times! Don’t get too discouraged just yet ladies I have a solution! I have come up with a list of non-alcoholic alternatives for some of your favorite cocktails.

Let your “Lit” summer commence!

White Sangria

Everyone loves a fruity sangria! This drink is always a go-to for an at home get together with your girls and they’re so easy to make! With this recipe, I stuck to berries, but what I love about sangrias is that you can literally add whatever fruits you want. There are no limits so get creative! Here’s a simple recipe for a simple, but fruity drink!

Recipe:

½ cup white grape juice (can also use white cranberry juice)

¼ cup of sparkling water

handful blackberries

handful blueberries

1/3 cup strawberries

handful ice (you can omit if you choose)

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a glass (or pitcher for larger serving size). Garnish with Strawberry and enjoy!

Watermelon Mojito

The second drink is the infamous mojito! Mojitos are also popular because of their freshness. There is just something so refreshing about mint leaves and lime! It’s even more refreshing when you add watermelons to the mix. Loads of goodness and loads of freshness without the calories!

Recipe:

1/2 lime

Sprigs of mint leaves (about a handful)

3-4 cups watermelon juice (fresh)

1 cup watermelon chunks

2 Tbsp lime juice

½ lime for garnish

handful ice

Instructions:

In a large pitcher or mixing bowl, add mint leaves, 2-3 limes, and lime juice. Use a wooden spoon to muddle them together (this helps extract and blend all of the flavors). Next, add watermelon juice, more mint leaves, and watermelon chunks. Mix well, let sit for 30 minutes to an hour (the longer the better). Garnish with lime and enjoy!

Summer Glow

When I hear the word glow, I automatically think about glowing skin! Who doesn’t want glowy skin in the summer? It’s perfect for your overall health, but also for those great natural skin summer selfies! This recipe is one that I drink a smoothie, but it can also be juiced and served as a cocktail (virgin that is).

Frozen Recipe:

1/3 cup orange juice

½ cup frozen pineapple chunks

3 Tbsp fresh ginger

¼ cucumber

handful ice

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Garnish with cucumber and serve!

Non-frozen recipe (tastes better fresh):

1 cup orange juice

½ cup pineapple juice (fresh)

3 Tbsp fresh ginger

¼ cucumber

4 ice cubes

orange slices and peels for garnish

Instructions:

Juice all ingredients. Strain if you want it to be pulp-free. Add ice cubes and orange slices or twisted orange peel for garnish and enjoy!

I hope you all enjoy these recipes as much as I do! You will thank yourself later when you are posing for your beach photos looking snatched during the summer! We are all for making memories with those you love, but also looking and feeling good while doing it.
