4 Mindset Must-Haves to Live Your Best Life

By: Sika Degbo

“It’s summertime and the living is easy” – that is… if you’re able to let go of the stresses of your job, personal to-dos, and relationship commitments long enough to enjoy the moment.

It’s not unusual to become overwhelmed by all of the different aspects of your life and forget to enjoy the fact that it’s summer, the sun is finally out and you’re not shivering under a heavy coat anymore (or under a light sweater if you’re in LA like me). It’s common to fall prey to lazy thinking and become absorbed by everything in your life that needs fixing, but if you want to enjoy this life journey then I have a couple of mindset shifts to suggest.

Here are some mindset must-haves to live your best life:

1. Decide to feel good every day

This is so vital. If we don’t decide that our happiness is a priority, then it’s bound to fall on the backburner and get lost in the midst of all of our other to-dos. This doesn’t have to be extravagant or time-consuming at all. We all have things that we enjoy and things we hate. It can be as simple as going for a brief walk and feeling the sun on our skin. Meditating for 5 minutes. Watching a video that always makes us smile or laugh. If it makes you feel good, then it's doing you some good.

2. Channel your ideal self to get your ideal life

Channel your ideal self in your day to day life more often. When making choices of how to act and how to behave, think of how the person you want to be would respond. If you were the confident, outgoing person you wanted to be, would you sit in your chair and watch the speaker at that panel stand at the food table or would you get up and introduce yourself? The behaviors and actions that you take are what determine whether you keep living the same life you always have or whether you cease opportunities and propel your life to the next level.

3. Refuse to Play Small

Notice in your life,  where you’re settling for less than what you want, because it’s comfortable or just familiar. If you want more, then know that you deserve it and start doing research on how to get it. Avoid stressing over how you’re going to get from where you are to where you want to be. Simply take it one step at a time. Get excited about the possibilities for your life and believe that if you want it enough, there’s nothing that you can’t have. If you have a tough time believing in yourself, there are plenty of TED talks, articles, and books available to show you success stories of the unlikely people who overcame adversity.

4. Acknowledge Accomplishments

We often fall into a habit of criticizing ourselves and feeling bad about the things we haven’t yet accomplished while forgetting all the things we have accomplished. This is a practice that will build your self-esteem. Whether it’s as simple as providing for yourself groceries and a roof to live under or as big as landing a dream job or a high-paying client, make sure you acknowledge the ways you’re killing it (because you are!). Avoid the temptation to compare yourself to the people around you or, even worse, the people you see on social media. Only compare yourself to who you were yesterday and build upon that for optimal satisfaction.

I hope you employ these mindset-shifts in your own life and experience the improvements that they bring. We all deserve to live our best life! Whether it’s a sunny day in June or a wintery day in January, you can put these mindset-must haves to work and see results in your life satisfaction.
