Balancing Your Health Goals with a Demanding Career

By Briana Elmore

Having a healthy routine is a vital part of any Twenty Somethin’s life. It is important to make sure that we are properly caring for ourselves so that we can reach new heights in all aspects of our lives. We have to have a balance in both our physical and mental health to be at our best.

Many times, we feel like we have to sacrifice healthy habits for the sake of our careers or the things that we are working on to create the life that we want for ourselves. However, that mindset does not have to be the end all for how we choose to navigate through our lives. We have to not only consider where we are currently but also where we want to be in the future to determine what health habits would be most beneficial for us to give our committed engagement.

Let’s face it, once you find out what the best habits to do are, it can be difficult to actually start putting action behind those ideals. You can get to the point where you know better, but to do better is a whole different journey in its own right. Regardless of if you are your own boss or working a 9-5, it can be hard to carve out the time necessary to hit the goals that you have for your physical and mental health. As you embark on your journey to better your overall health while balancing your career, it is important to be intentional with your time and goals.

Four important questions to ask yourself as you begin to pursue both health and career are the following:

How demanding is your job?

While assessing your plan of action to move forward with your health-career balance, you must have an accurate grasp of how much time an effort you can realistically put towards your goals. It is also beneficial to gain an understanding of how much energy you have in relation to your job. For instance, there can be times that you are strapped for time and energy while working on a project leaving your health low on the priority list. You want to have realistic fitness goals and practices in place that will not hinder your career nor your health.

What is your schedule before and after work?

Mapping out your schedule before, during, and after your working hours. It is a common misconception that you have to be in the gym all day to lose weight. Although the gym is very important, you do not have to be there forever to see the results that you desire. If you only have 20 minutes to dedicate to physical activity, that 20 minutes can be very effective when you take a targeted approach to the areas you are seeking to change.

What ways can you incorporating Healthy Habits into your everyday life?

The saying goes, “abs are built in the kitchen” and your diet is something that plays a big role in your fitness levels. While in the midst of a demanding career it can be difficult to get to the gym or to always have access to the healthiest food options. I implore you to get active with meal prep. Preparing your meals can not only give you the healthy food options that you need to attain and maintain good health, but it can also alleviate you from any stress with contemplating what to eat. With meal prep, you have one major thing off of your plate giving you the ability to focus more on your career.

What is a way that you can have a positive outlook on exercise?

Many of us have big dreams with very demanding paths to success. We often times need to have a good outlet to alleviate us from some of the stress. Its important to find constructive ways to both decompress from your day and build your physical fitness. This seperation can not only assist you in accomplishing your physical goals but it can renew your mental space. Having that release from an exercise regimen that you are invested in gaining enjoyment from will give you a new level of fulfillment in your career and fitness goals.

There is not one road to balancing your career and fitness levels. It is important to take yourself into account as you embark on finding your balance in your life. When you make your health a priority in a functional way to fit your lifestyle, success will be sure to follow.
