How to Motivate Yourself to be Active This Summer

By Derika Crowley

I love being home. I like sitting on my couch, watching Netflix and doing absolutely nothing. This is who I have been lately, and it was fine during the winter and spring; but, now it’s summer and it’s time to get and be social. Yes, I save way more money when I stay home, but this can’t be my excuse anymore. This summer, I’m determined to say “goodbye” to my homebody ways and be more active when it comes to working out and enjoying the hot weather overall.

I know that I’m not alone in struggling to force myself out of the house on weekends, so I thought it would be helpful to put together a list of easy ways for homebodies and introverts to motivate themselves to stay active this summer. This list isn’t just confided to fitness but highlights how to active both health-wise and socially.

JOIN A FITNESS GROUP

I’ve recently joined a running club in my area and have enjoyed it! Having a workout community not only encourages you stay active, but it’s also a good way to hold yourself accountable.

If running isn’t your thing, you can find a group for anything honestly. If you want to walk, swim, play tennis or golf, you can find a group that aligns with your interests on Eventbrite or using the Meetup app. You can also utilize hashtags on Instagram to find local groups as well.

FIND FREE EVENTS AND VISIT FARMER’S MARKETS

Most cities have farmer’s markets and local events that are free to the public, so look on your county website and see what’s going on.

Sometimes, they’ll have community calendar in local boutiques and apartment complexes too to inform of upcoming events.

GO FOR A WALK

Walking for 15 minutes a day is a good way to clear your head and fit some exercise in. Put in your headphones, turn on your favorite podcast and walk around your block – who knows, you may meet a few of your neighbors!

SEE WHAT YOUR FRIENDS ARE UP TO

If you truly want to spend the day indoors and binge-watching Netflix, go do it at a friend’s place! This way you’re still staying true to your homebody self but making an effort to get out in the world and be social.

CREATE FITNESS GOALS

What do you want to achieve this summer? Walk for 15 minutes every day? Eat healthier? Whatever your goals all, write them down and place them where they are clearly visible.
