Naturally, Summer-Good Protective Styles for Summer

Naturally, Summer-Good Protective Styles for Summer

By Briana Elmore

As a natural hair girl, finding your stride can be a tough road! From making the decision to go natural, learning how to manage natural hair, to product testing, to styles, it can be a struggle! Each season brings its own mood and summer 2019 is no different! We each want to look our best as we capture a different look to slay! As Black Twenty Somethins, we love versatility with our looks, especially our hairstyles.

Natural hair can be difficult to manage. I know, all too well, how easy it is to get stuck in a rut when it comes to styles. You get so used to the process of discovering what styles that look good and are in your skill set to  actually do, once you find a couple go-to styles that work, it gets difficult to go outside of those looks. However, I challenge each Team Natural Twenty Somethin to try something new this summer! Switch it up and THRIVE!

There are so many different types of styles that you can choose from to give yourself a different edge for the summer! Finding and properly executing a new hairstyle can give you feelings of accomplishment and renewed confidence. You can harness this positivity into your personal, professional, and hustle life. It may seem silly to say all this comes from a new hairstyle, but a change as small as switching up your hair can have an immense domino effect on the rest of your life. It’s like one signal that sets the pace for you to not stay stagnant but rather evolve into a new version of yourself.

Here are a few of my favorite summer switch-up protective styles that you can look try!

Weather you decide to go with as individual braids or braid to the scalp braids or twists, it is sure to be a gamechanger. Having a hairstyle that already is done save you so much time when getting ready. Hair is a major component of your overall look and having it done already gives helps with your efficiency to get out of the house while looking your best. Additionally, this hairstyle can withstand heat that summer brings! Your likelihood of sweating out your braids is low.

The maintenance is relatively low impact. You need to have a trusted scarf/bonnet combo for sleeping, good oil to keep your scalp moisturized, and trusted edge control. The amount of versatility that you can accomplish with braids are plentiful! This is a great option to explore.

Twist Out Updo

Twist-Outs are old faithful for naturals. However, you can do your twist out routine but give it a new style! I have found that picking a new style can help make your twist outs last longer. These are fun ways to spice up a classic look and expand your go-to styles. Updos can also assist you in keeping cooled down.

You can rock your twist out for a few days and once it gets a little older and has gained its volume but maybe lost some of it’s curl definition, finding a cute and simple updo can change the game and increase your efficiency with your hair.

Wigs/ Sew-Ins

The summer is a great time to explore different looks. You can play around with length, color and fullness without sacrificing your real hair with wigs and sew ins. You can give your natural hair a break and still slay. This protective style can offer the most versatility and can also potentially be generally easy to keep up.

The proper install will start you on the best foot possible. After that, you want to make sure your edge control is on point as well as blending your real hair with the wig or sew-in. Consult with your stylist for the best practices to make your installation last.

With each of these protective styles you want to make sure that you have a proper installation to put your best foot forward. If there is a style that you do not know how to do on your own, do your research. Look up tutorials and try to teach yourself. However, if you are not able to get it on your own, seek the help of a professional to help you slay your look and teach you how to keep it up!

Can’t wait to see you slay your natural looks!
