Summer Skin Care Essentials for an “At Home” Facial

I love to get regular facials, but right now they aren’t in the budget. So, what’s a girl to do? DIY of course! During the winter, I’m all about keeping my skin hydrated and moisturized; but, in the summer this getting a little trickier because my skin is naturally oily.

For the most part, I don’t switch up my products too much, but I do swap out a few items to ensure I get a more matte effect in the beginning, so as I become oiler throughout the day, I get a dewier effect.  I do however, make sure that I give myself a facial more frequently and use facemasks focused on creating a natural glow over those that promote moisture and hydration.


·     Cleanser

·     Toner

·     Facial Spray

·     Exfoliator

·     Extractor Tools

·     Clay Mask

·     Serum

·     Sunscreen

·     Face Steamer (Optional)


Let’s talk about how to give yourself a facial. After years of esthetician (and good ol’ Pinterest) this is the most common routine for an at home facial:

1.   Remove makeup, dirt and grime:

Make sure all of your makeup is removed using cleansing water or a balm. My favorites at the moment are L'Oréal Micellar Cleansing Water and Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm.

2.   Cleanse:

Using a cleanser to wash your face thoroughly (I like to use a brush, but you don’t have to)

3.   Steam:

I purchased a $20 cleanser off Amazon which is AMAZING. After cleansing, I put my face over my steamer for a few minutes to open my pores up. If you don’t want to invest in a steamer, you can do this in the shower, using a hot washcloth or boil some water on the stove and put your face over it (do what you do, boo).

4.   Exfoliate:

After the steam, scrub away dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliant. After your face, remember to scrub your lips too.

5.   Extract:

Using extractor tools, get rid of any whiteheads or blackheads that you have. This part is tricky, so if you don’t feel comfortable go to a professional.

6.   Mask:

Apply a clay mask to your face and neck. Let the mask sit for about 10 – 15 minutes and then remove.

7.   Rehydrate and Apply Toner:

After you’ve removed your mask, rehydrate your skin with a toner or facial spray (or both)

8.   Apply serum:

Apply a small amount of facial serum to your skin to give it a boost.

9.   Moisturize:

Apply an eye cream to your undereye area and facial cream to your face and neck. Treat spot any blemishes or dark marks. Apply lip balm as well.

10.   Sunscreen:

If you’re headed out for the day after your skincare routine, remember your sunscreen!
